Vol. 2 - marzo 2007

Welcome to the second edition of Info-Governance, an e-newsletter dedicated to and addressing the concerns of all professionals in Puerto Rico that work or have an interest in information technology, governance, security, and IT audit.  The first volume got some good reviews from the readers and from some of the directors of the professional associations.  I have highlighted this in the next section of this e-Newsletter.

I am publishing the association activities for March.  I am also including some photos of February meeting of InfrGard, the FBI’s association dedicated to Cyber Security which met at Centennial’s facilities. One of the primary purposes of this e-Newsletter is to publish the activities which certified professionals can attend to obtain Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits.  As with all publications, reader feedback is important to keep the e-newsletter on target and addressing the needs of its subscribers - I wholeheartedly request that feedback.  Please send all suggestions, comments, and constructive criticism to jrobles@coqui.net or visit www.johnrrobles.com.

Technology News

In this section of the newsletter, we will be publishing articles of interest to information technology, governance, and other professionals in Puerto Rico.  Today’s article looks at the concepts and concerns in the use of Server Virtualization.  This concepts refers to virtual servers versus physical servers - where a physical server can now have the equivalent of several virtual servers.  This concentration of servers on a physical unit assist in consolidating servers and using less hardware.

In following volumes, we will look at IT security, IT audit, new information technology, and management issues in the use of technology. An advisory committee will also receive articles of interest for publication. Contact me for more information.

Professional Associations

An important part of this newsletter is the identification of professional associations that provide training and seminars to information technology, governance, security, and other professionals in Puerto Rico.  We will publish all activities and seminars of these associations so that each professional can select which seminar or training to attend for their own professional growth, as well as, the accumulation of Continuing Professional Credits for their certification requirements.

You probably noticed that last month, three associations had activities on the same night.  This month it happened again.  I’ll be contacting the associations to try to eliminate various associations having an activity on the same night.  This will help the associations because more persons can attend their activities and it will help our readers because they will have more opportunities to attend the activities of their choice.

Server Virtualization

ISACA Puerto Rico is the local chapter of ISACA - an international association that serves IT Governance professionals. A typical data center in Puerto Rico can have tens of servers in what is known as a “Server Farm”. Sometime a physical server can be running only a particular application.  Many times, server resources may not be used on a continuous basis and may be wasted or go unused.  Server Virtualization is used in server consolidations, thereby, resulting in physical server resources being used more efficiently.  There are also other users for Server virtualization, such as, being a component in a Data Center’s Disaster Recovery Planning process.

Read Wikipedia’s definition of Virtualization here.  Some interesting articles on Server Virtualization and its use in Disaster Recovery Planning can be found here and here.  A short video clip explaining the concept is here.
